The Transformation of Artistic Creation Through AI
Embracing the R/Evolution: The Transformation of Image Crafting Through AI.

Short version (everything you need to know):
Here's what's coming from me this Spring: prints, book news, lessons, collectibles, apps, and my new online store.
I'm very stoked to announce that I am finally on the brink of unleashing a collection of brand-new art prints. Each month, starting in May I will offer six new limited edition archival prints available online exclusively for that month. (I know - I’ve already said this…but they are coming!) Meanwhile, I've nearly cracked the code on a series of AI image-crafting lessons - I’m trying to create a roadmap to help designers, photographers, architects, illustrators, - basically any and all image crafters adapt to and make use of AI. Those will be ready soon and eventually available online along with my prints. Maybe even some puzzles. I’m very excited to announce that at least one coffee table book of my work will be available in 2025. Details will follow, as well as a pre-sale campaign. In addition to that, I’m thinking of an art/instruction/philosophy book with a Kickstarter campaign, but we will see. My ‘visual stories’ will soon be coming to a TV near you through the new Windowsight app, and finally a surprise SDM collectible from House of Roulx.
I’ll release my store URL details and the release dates of everything when ready. Soon now! Here first, then on Instagram.
Thanks for your patience.
Steve

long version (my long rambling answer to all the recent AI questions):
Embracing the R/Evolution: The Transformation of Image Crafting Through AI.
Is it a revolution or an evolution? Or neither? In the realm of artistic creation, the emergence of AI tools has produced a seismic shift in how imagery is crafted, challenging our traditional perceptions and methodologies of art. The debate surrounding these tools often centers on questions like "Did you draw that?" or "What parts did you do?", which arguably miss the broader implications. These inquiries, which cling to outdated frameworks, fail to recognize that AI is not merely an alternative technique but a transformative approach that revolutionizes the entire creative process.
AI technology empowers artists with knowledge, experience, and imagination to not only create stunning visuals but also to compose entire visual worlds. This new paradigm shifts the focus from the restrictive 'how' to the expansive 'why', emphasizing the evolution of ideation over the process. As we move away from traditional art rules, we embrace a newfound freedom devoid of physical limitations, allowing artists like myself to rethink and reshape our creative workflows.
This liberation for me has been profound. AI has expanded my engagement with my imagination, enabling me to experiment and develop scenes and characters on scales previously unimaginable. I have constructed hundreds (thousands) of different sets using various custom diffusion models, rendering platforms, and countless new tools. This capability has allowed me to produce thousands of images in my distinct style that suits multiple creative purposes—ranging from book illustrations to prints, and from commercial work to social media content.
The integration of AI in artistic endeavors isn't about abandoning the essence of art but enhancing the ability to create without restrictions, including the traditional tactile ones. For those who prefer those tactile methods, I want to affirm that these methods remain valid and respected. However, my chosen path is one of exploration, embracing the new possibilities that AI introduces. Criticisms rooted in traditional standards appear misplaced as AI art is about creating anew, powered by vision and unlimited potential. This journey is marked by open-source collective creativity, driven by my imagination and a desire to redefine what illustration can be.
The true essence of artistry is creating a process that is eloquently personal and intelligently adapted to our aspirations and abilities. With AI, I am not merely following steps; I am crafting a workflow that resonates successfully with my vision, embracing the new, and transforming potential into reality. This journey of learning, adapting, and innovating has been profoundly fulfilling.

As I navigate this transition, I am leveraging both my traditional skills and the new capabilities offered by AI, actively participating in the reshaping of our artistic landscape. This period isn't just a time of change; it's a historical record, capturing a pivotal moment in the evolution of image crafting. Each piece we all create during this period will serve as a testament to this transition, a bridge between the past and the future of image crafting. Embracing this change isn't merely about adapting; it's about reveling in the opportunity to be part of something truly monumental.
In the ever-evolving landscape of artistic creation, the ability to learn and adopt new ways to approach long-established processes is not just necessary—it's exhilarating. Each discovery and integration of a novel method into our creative arsenal offers a fresh perspective, enabling us to transcend traditional boundaries and foster innovation. This thrill of discovery motivates my intention to offer lessons, which will emphasize the philosophical and theoretical aspects of creating images in the modern AI era, rather than be merely technical guides.
I’ll delve into the essence of what it means to craft a personal artistic process that harmonizes the old with the new. By exploring how traditional skills can be integrated with cutting-edge tools, we open up a dialogue about what truly makes an image resonate with audiences, irrespective of the methods used to create it. Whether the tools are AI-powered or hand-driven, the intrinsic qualities of a good image—its ability to convey emotion, narrative, and aesthetic harmony—will always remain constant.
Moreover, I will discuss the enduring importance of traditional art knowledge and experience. Understanding the fundamentals of art, from composition to color theory, provides a solid foundation upon which one can more effectively wield the capabilities of Rendering platforms and Diffusion Models. This foundation not only enhances the artist's ability to employ new tools but also enriches the creative process, ensuring that technological advances enhance rather than overshadow the artist's vision.
The lessons will aim to inspire artists to redefine their creative identities and to develop processes that reflect both their heritage and their future aspirations. By fostering a deep understanding of both the philosophical underpinnings and the practical applications of combining traditional techniques with AI, these sessions will help artists at any stage of their career navigate and thrive in this new artistic epoch. Hopefully, I will not only educate but also to empower artists to create works that are profoundly personal and universally compelling, bridging the gap between the art of the past and the innovations of the future.

AI as a Medium
Approaching AI in artistic creation requires a shift in perspective—it's not merely a tool but a medium, akin to a new kind of paint or a digital stylus endowed with magical properties. Like any medium, AI has unique characteristics and behaviors that, when embraced, can lead to unexpected and often breathtaking results. This perspective encourages artists to let AI flow naturally within the creative process, including welcoming the serendipitous 'mistakes' that can lead to breakthroughs in artistic expression.
To truly harness the potential of AI, artists should experiment with it as they would with a new medium. This means testing its limits, playing with its capabilities, and understanding its nuances. Just as watercolors differ from acrylics, AI offers a very different set of properties that can be manipulated and explored. It requires a willingness to let go of complete control and allow the AI to contribute to the creative output, merging the artist's vision with the algorithm's unique interpretation.
Having fun with the medium is essential. The joy of creation should not be lost in the pursuit of mastering the technology. Instead, integrating AI should add a layer of excitement and novelty, as each project can reveal new possibilities and outcomes that were previously unimaginable. By treating AI like a partner in the creative process, artists can discover new ways of expressing ideas and emotions, creating art that is not only innovative but also deeply personal and engaging as well as potentially collaborative on an immense scale.
Embracing AI as a medium rather than just a tool opens up a world where digital and traditional arts enhance each other, where the boundary between artist and medium blurs, leading to a more fluid and dynamic form of artistic expression. This approach encourages a more profound connection with technology, fostering a collaborative relationship that can push artistic boundaries and redefine what is possible in the world of image crafting.

A New Approach (with old knowledge)
When artists gain access to AI tools, they unlock a realm where any style, look, or subject can be conjured with a few clicks or commands. While this boundless opportunity excites the imagination, it also introduces a unique set of challenges, particularly in deciding what to produce. The sheer volume of possibilities can be overwhelming, requiring a shift in the artist's skill set away from traditional tactile creation to a more curtorial role.
This new challenge demands a discerning eye, not only for what is aesthetically pleasing or technically impressive but also for what is meaningful and original. Artists must now develop the ability to critique a broader array of outcomes, select the best results, and refine these choices in alignment with their artistic vision. Unlike traditional media, where the artist's hand directly shapes the outcome, AI-generated art often presents a plethora of options, each slightly different from the next. Choosing the right one involves an intimate understanding of the nuances that make an image stand out.
Moreover, this environment demands a deep knowledge of what constitutes a truly singular image. It requires understanding the elements that resonate with audiences—be it the emotion conveyed, the uniqueness of the composition, or the story behind the visual. Artists must ask themselves not just how an image was created, but why it matters, what it communicates, and how it contributes to the larger narrative they wish to tell.
This evolution in skill sets moves the artist from a creator to an orchestrator and editor, where their role is increasingly about guiding the artistic process rather than solely executing it. Mastering AI as a medium, therefore, isn't just about learning how to operate software or generate visuals; it's about cultivating an ability to see beyond the surface, to understand the interplay of elements that make an artwork compelling and transformative. By embracing these challenges, artists can harness the full potential of AI, producing works that are not only visually stunning but also rich in meaning and impact.
